GFX: On June 30, four Planned Parenthood health centers in Iowa will be forced to close after the state rejected federal funding for family planning. GFX: Almost 15,000 patients will lose access to their trusted health care provider. GFX: Phoebe is one of those patients. Phoebe: I don’t know where I’m gonna go. I honestly, I can’t even drive 2 hours to the Cedar Rapids Planned Parenthood. Phoebe in background: Hey kiddo, wait for mama! Phoebe: I’m glad I had him, I love him more than anything in the whole world. But, it is extremely hard. To be a single mom, to have a mental illness and try to raise your child. Phoebe: Two years ago, I went on a date with a man that ended up taking advantage of me for a very long time. Everybody knew that Planned Parenthood was there. I said, “I don’t know if you have a male doctor here, but I really can’t see one. I need to see a female doctor.” And they were totally fine with that. Phoebe: My challenges may be different from other women’s, but some of the challenges are the same like cancer screenings, like the Pap test are so important. It’s literally to make sure that I am healthy enough for the child I have. Phoebe: I’m supposed to have an exam every year, I don’t know where I’m gonna go. Phoebe: It’s not a numbers game. We’re people. And our lives are really affected by this. These are our lives.
